If your iPhone (or iPad’s) personal hotspot option is missing, here are some options to fix it now!

Check your personal hotspot setup

  1. Personal hotspot is available for devices with iOS 7 and higher
  2. Your plan must include data and a personal hotspot as a feature
  3. Go to Settings> Cellular
  4. Tap Personal Hotspot

    1. If you don’t see this option, contact your wireless service provider to make sure the feature is part of your plan

  5. Switch on the personal hotspot

    1. To change the password, go to Settings> Cellular> Personal hotspot
    2. Tap the WiFi password
    3. Enter your password
    4. If you change your password, all connected devices are automatically disconnected, so you have to reconnect them with the updated password

Troubleshoot Personal Hotspot

  1. Update your device’s iOS via iTunes or Settings> General> Software update

  2. Turn Bluetooth and WiFi off and on
  3. Update your network operator settings

  6. Reset the network settings by going to Settings> General> Reset> Reset network settings

  7. Restart your devices by turning them off, waiting 30 seconds, and then turning them on again

  8. Force restart your devices
    1. On an iPhone 8 or higher or an iPad without a home button: Briefly press the volume up button. Briefly press the volume down button. Then press and hold the power button or the side button until the device restarts

  9. Restore from a recent backup
    1. If you routinely back up your device using iTunes or iCloud, try to restore your devices and see if that solves the problem
    2. Remember that you lose all data between your last restoration and the present

Are you using an Access Point Name (or APN) on your iPhone or iPad?

If your APN (Access Point Name) settings are incorrect, the personal hotspot may not appear as an option

View your APN settings

  • Settings> Cellular> Cellular data options> Cellular network
  • Settings> Mobile data> Mobile data options> Mobile data network

You may need to re-enter your APN settings after updating your iOS. Contact your network operator if you are not familiar with these settings.

If you are using an iPhone or iPad in a corporate environment, you may need to contact your mobile device administrator to change your APN.

Change APN settings

  1. tap Settings> Cellular> Cellular network or Settings> Mobile data> Mobile data options> Mobile data network.
    1. Then copy the settings for cellular data / mobile data into the personal hotspot
    2. To change your settings, tap on each field and enter the details or get these details from your wireless service provider

Reset your APN

  1. Go to Settings> Cellular> Cellular network.

Look for an APN configuration profile

  1. Go to Settings> General> Profiles
