What is the lost mode on an iPad or iPod?
If you cannot find your iPad or iPod touch, you should activate the lost mode under “Find my iPhone”.
Lost Mode enables a range of security features to further protect your privacy while helping you to retrieve your device.
You should also inform the local authorities immediately. If you believe that your iPad or iPod touch has been stolen, please do not address the suspects yourself. Leave that to the police.
Lost Mode first prompts you to create a passcode for your device if you have not already used one. This prevents strangers from having access to your personal data.
In Lost mode, your iPad or iPod touch does not display notifications on the lock screen, but can still answer FaceTime calls.
In lost mode, you can add a contact number and a message that will appear on your device’s screen when someone finds them. You can take this opportunity to offer the finder a reward and tell them how to contact you:
“This iPad has been lost. Please call me for a reward. “

Don’t worry, even when it’s offline, the activation lock prevents anyone from completely resetting your device.
What is activation lock?
Your device activates the activation lock at the same time as “Find my iPhone”. It securely connects your device to your Apple ID on Apple’s servers.
That means someone needs your Apple ID password before they can erase and set up your device again.
This applies as long as you keep Find My iPhone on for your device. The activation lock is deactivated as soon as you remove the device from your iCloud or Apple ID account or deactivate Find My iPhone.
Should I delete my iPad or iPod touch?
No. Unless you’re selling or giving away your iPad or iPod touch, you shouldn’t use the “Erase Device” button in “Find My iPhone”.
It’s tempting to see the option next to “Lost Mode” and think it’s a good idea. Why don’t you want to free your missing iPad or iPod touch from personal data?
However, deleting your device actually turns off Find My iPhone, so you can’t track the location.
Deleting the device also disables the activation lock so that a new user can set it up as new.
You should only erase your device if there is no chance you will ever retrieve it, or if you have given it away or sold it to someone else.
